After several heavily jazz-oriented albums recorded in the United States — the 1995 release Trombone Man (Tropijazz) is a classic — Torres returns to the venerable Cuban son tradition, the root of virtually all Cuban music from the last century. The album’s annotator, Cuban musicologist Leonardo Costa, adroitly points out that Torres 'avoids any kind of fusion … and presents us with a son stripped of modernizing robes, but without falling into the other extreme of folkloric purism.'
