Avec Johnny Hodges, nous tenons l’une des figures tutélaires du saxophone, aussi essentielle pour l’alto que le furent ses contemporains Coleman Hawkins pour le ténor ou Sidney Bechet pour le soprano. Il 'signait' ses interventions d’une inflexion de la note, attaquée en dessous et atteinte par un glissando qui lui donnait une cambrure caractéristique. Un parkérien d’obédience comme Phil Woods n’a jamais dissimulé l’admiration qu’il continuait à porter à Hodges. Paul BENKIMOUN – DIAPASON.
