When it comes to drumming, Roy is far above the normal, but we are in a period of jazz when taste, imagination and sound musicianship are not enough. It is a period in which gimmicks and studied eccentricity very decidedly pay off. This is not to say that in some cases the great eccentrics are not also great musicians, but their odd behavior often seems to be as responsible for their popularity as their music. The audience which is treated as though it did not exist is not dismayed. It loves to be spurned. When its applause is not acknowledged, it only applauds the louder.
