Rob Agerbeek & Ruud Brink

"Pardon my bop"

1989 (réf. BJJR 016).
titrealter

Recorded live at Nick Vollebregt's JazzCafé in Laren, Holland, on October 19th, 1989.

Sharp-edged work from a cool Dutch combo one co-led by pianist Rob Agerbeek and saxophonist Ruud Brink both great players, even if they're not well known over here in the US! Agerbeek's got years of jazz work under his belt by the time of this set and he plays with a sound that's quickly imaginative to live up to the bop title, but also has a warmer, more sensitive approach too one that unfolds beautifully as the album rolls on, and makes it much more than just a bop-revival affair. Brink's great too and mostly plays tenor with a raspy, soulful tone but also plays a bit of clarinet, and even sings a bit on two tracks too. Remaining quartet members include Harry Emmery on bass and Jo Krause on drums and titles include 'Pardon My Bop', 'It's You Or No One', 'I Can't Get Started', 'Four', and 'The Red Door'.

Rob Agerbeek

"Home run"

1971 (réf. BJJR 033).
titrealter

A definite home run from Dutch pianist Rob Agerbeek a hip set recorded in 1971, and one that's done with a very soulful groove! The group's a quintet, and Rob really sparkles in this setting pushing the players with a subtle skill that recalls Horace Silver at his Blue Note best especially in the way that Agerbeek mixes upbeat grooving with more sensitive sounds on the set! Other players include Dick Vennik on tenor and flute, Willem Reinen on flugelhorn, Rob Langereis on bass, and Eric Ineke on drums a really great group of players who fit toghether wonderfully here pushing the grooves of the tunes strongly forward with warm energy, but also breaking out with some sharp solos of their own. Titles include the funky classic The Chair Dance plus Little Miss Dee, Just Robbish, Minor Rush, and The Blue Countess.

Avec la participation de :
Rob Agerbeek (piano), Eric Ineke (drums), Robert Langereis (bass), Frank Moya (guitar), Willem Reinen, Dick Vennik (saxophone)

Joe Albany

"Epiphany"

1976 (réf. BJJR 039).
titrealter

Rare solo piano work from the great Joe Albany heard here in a beautifully unfettered setting! There's a fluid sort of magic here that special quality that Albany was always cited for in his piano work, but which unfortunately was tragically under-recorded over the years. Most tunes are quite short, and have an echoey quality that's quite striking a sense of room and space that comes from the recording, and which seems to fold back the sound and make Albany's moves on the keys even more striking. Titles include Bluebird, Slow Blues In F, How Deep Is The Ocean, Jitterbug Waltz, Old Old Friends, Woody N You, and For Heaven's Sake.

Ruud Brink & Irv Rochlin

"Where or when"

1984 (réf. BJJR 010).
titrealter

A great date in the 'forgotten tapes' series on this hip overseas label a set that features some excellent tenor work from Rudd Brink, recorded here in an open-ended live setting! Brink's got a sound that's really great a slight raspy edge at times, but a fluid groove at others a bit like Richie Kamuca at his best, and a personal approach that keeps things compelling throughout! The group's co-led with pianist Irv Rochlin, and the tracks are all longish with lots of solo room for both players opening up nicely on tunes that include 'Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most', 'S'Posin', 'The Things I Love', 'Chicago Scenes', 'Tippin', and 'Rudy's Blues'.

Ruud Brink (saxophone), Irv Rochlin (piano), John Engels (drums), Victor Kaihatu
